5.2.7 Polymers for Food Packaging. Main Features

In the following Sections, a synthetic description of the main characteristics of most common polymers for plastic packaging production is discussed. They are listed in order of importance, from the most abundant (about 50 %) polyethylene, to minor polymers that all together account for less than 2 % of the total mass of plastics for food packaging purposes. The basic formulas of discussed polymers are reported in Fig. 5.2, while the meaning of all symbols used for plastic polymers used in packaging is reported together in Fig. 5.3 with related codes for recycling purposes.
